Vineet Upreti, who achieved a distinction in his recent MBA from the School of Business and Economics, won the competition run by Concordia Consultancy Limited - a global firm which provides risk consulting and claims adjusting services for insurers, Lloyds Underwriters, plus re-insurers, brokers, risk managers and the legal profession.

Mr Upreti's dissertation was entitled An Evaluation of Value-at-Risk Models as a Technique for Risk Estimation Under Volatile Market Conditions.

Paul May, Chairman of Concordia Consultancy Ltd said: "As an international consultancy firm specialising in risk issues we are pleased to be able to support Vineet and to reflect his high level of performance by awarding him the prize".

The Concordia prize is the second prestigious award Mr Upreti has won in the last two years; in August 2008 he was presented with the 2007/08 Grant Thornton Prize for his paper 'EBFM08: Risk Management and Derivatives'.

Mr Upreti has also received the Willis Doctoral Fellowship award which will enable him to return to Swansea University in October 2009 to pursue doctoral research into the link between reinsurance and the cost of capital in the UK's property-liability insurance market. Mr Upreti is the University's second recipient of the Willis Doctoral Fellowship: Ms Joy Jia, a PhD student in the School of Business and Economics at Swansea was awarded the Fellowship last year.

Professor Mike Adams, Chair of Finance at Swansea University's School of Business and Economics said: "My colleagues and I are very pleased that Vineet Upreti has won the Concordia Dissertation Prize and welcome the opportunities that being a Concordia prize winner will give him. Vineet is the first postgraduate student to win two best student prizes and this achievement reflects his great potential for a rewarding career in the field of finance."

Mr Upreti said: "I am very pleased to have received this award which is commercial recognition of my academic achievement. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude towards Concordia Consultancy Limited and to Professor Mike Adams for their kindness and support. Winning this competition has helped motivate me to further improve my performance and to succeed in my studies. The award will also help to distinguish my CV and, ultimately, to improve my career prospects in a highly competitive job market."
